With System splitting, it is very apparent who had the penchant for song writing between them. No longer do you look through the liner notes of SOAD's disography and have to guess who had more of an influence in the lyrics of a song when you see split credit between Malakian/Tankian. This album falls flat on its face with abhorent lyrical content. Daron Malakian must take 5 minutes per song and write whatever elementary school dribble that pops into his head.Musically, the album is acceptable but lyrics make it utterly forgettable.
Great effort for one half of SOAD. Maybe the only thing is that the voice (SOAD's guitarrist sings and plays guitar here) sounds kind of similar. Very solid album, great songs, uncompromised lyrics; I liked a lot from first hearing. Also, the vinyl alternative I bought is pretty good recorded, a well pressed one. This is relative because this is his way to sing, but is not as versatile as Serj's voice from SOAD. Give it a try.
Man, this is the most catchiest thing ive heard in a long time. Daron has mastered the art of writing great pop tunes and "heavying" them up a bit. Great riffs, brilliant vocal melodies and funny as hell lyrics, some pretty deep and insightful too. You can hear from this album, who exactly is the musical mastermind behind System of a Down. So disappointed they have pulled out of "Soundwave 2009". If you like anything about SOAD you MUST get this album.
eh.this albums okay i guess. it has its strong points. but its also got its failing moments. but all and all daron did good.
As we all know, SOAD broke up a couple years ago due to internal tensions within the band. Scars on Broadway is just Daron writing what he wants to and doing an incredible job. This album is less metal and more in your face hard rock.
On the Mesmerize/hypnotize records Daron sang quite a bit more than he had before; it didn't bother me and it sure as hell doesn't bother me now. The songs are extremely catchy; there isn't a single track that I don't like, and it flows together as an album very well. Many fans and, most likely Serj Tankian himself, felt that Daron Malakian was taking too much control over the band.
Unlike the choppy sound on SOAD records, Scars On Broadway brings a much more streamlined melodic sound to the table. After listening to this album it's crystal clear who the genius behind SOAD was. Although Serj delivered wonderful vocals, it appears that Daron has the incredible sense of melody and songwriting that made SOAD so great.
I was pretty dissapointed with Serj Tankian's solo record because he tried to make a record that sounded exactly like SOAD, but it didn't work; the guitar work was flat and uninspiring and the melody was almost completely gone. Buy this album now.
